Hieizan Driveway

A Safe and Comfortable tourist road that coexists with the Nature of Mt. Hiei

Drive from Kyoto or Otsu through Tanotani Toge gate to Mt. Hiei Trees line up along the road, It looks as if people are being integrated into the corridor of nature of “Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park“.

Along the road, there are many attractive facilities in various locations, such as “Yumemigaoka” with a splendid view, such as a casual resort hotel “L’Hôtel de Hiei,” such as a world heritage siteEnryaku-ji Temple of Mt. Hiei” with a tranquil and calm space filled with rich historical and cultural atmosphere spreading over the mountain, such as “Garden Museum Hiei,” where paintings have been reproduced on porcelain panels, that is seasonally blooming flowers are grown in the gardens. The moment you get off the car, you will be relieved by the atmosphere in the mountain.

Observatory spot “Yumemigaoka”
At Yumemigaoka Observatory, which boasts the best view of the Hieizan Driveway, overlooks the city of Otsu and the southern part of Lake Biwa.The night view is also beautiful and quite popular. And Cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn add color to the landscape, these are lit up at night.
Observatory spot “Tosendai Parking Lot”
Located in front of a casual resort hotel, “L’Hôtel de Hiei,” the Tosendai parking lot is the perfect point to see the sunset. It is possible to enjoy two different types of scenery from this site: a vast view of Kyoto and Osaka to the southwest and a landscape of the urban area of Otsu City and Lake Biwa to the southeast. In the center of the parking lot, the prefectural boundary line between Kyoto and Shiga was drawn, which was introduced in the NHK popular program “BURATAMORI.” It has become a popular photo spot.
World Cultural Heritage Site “Hieisan Enryakuji Temple”
Enryakuji Temple was founded by Dengyo Daishi Saicho, as a Buddhist dojo to calm the country. After that, the Enryaku-ji Temple produced the founders of Kamakura Buddhism, such as Honen, Shinran, and Nichiren, and has been developing as “the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism. The 17,000-hectare temple grounds are divided into three areas: Todo, Saito, and Yokawa. In Todo, there is a national treasure Konpon Chudo.
Garden museum “Garden Museum Hiei” 
At the Garden Museum Hiei, you can enjoy the replicas, which has duplicated on the ceramic plates, of French Impressionist painters such as Monet and Renoir, with beautiful seasonable flowers. The observation tower in the garden at an altitude of 840 meters overlooks a view of the vast scenery of Kyoto and Osaka as well as the Biwako-Ohashi Bridge and the northern area of Kyoto (Yase, Ohara area). On clear days, you can look out over the Osaka Bay and Awaji-shima Island to the south, and Mt. Ibuki and Chikubu Island to the north. Because it is the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view.
