Drive Guide

Manza Highway

A travel route connecting many encounters (with people, nature, impression)

Manza Highway is a road along which you can feel different beautiful views of the “Joshin’etsukogen National Park” in each of the four seasons. Drive down Onioshi Highway through National Route 144 to Manza Onsen, and you will reach a mountain road leading to an altitude of 1,800 meters.
Joshin’etsukogen National Park” is an enormous park comprising highlands and mountains, including Mt. Tanigawa (1,977 m above sea level), Mt. Naeba (2,145 m above sea level), Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane (2,160 m above sea level), Mt. Azumaya (2,354 m above sea level), and Mt. Asama (2,568 m above sea level). ※Click here for the highlights of Joshin’etsukogen National Park
Drive up windings and the Tsumagoi Highland while looking Mt. Asama behind, and you will get to Manza Onsen, the end of the Manza Highway. The smell of sulfur and milky-white hot spring will relieve the weariness of your journey. In winter, although there are days when the weather is quite chilly as a mountain road, a hot spring unique to Manza Onsen and powder snow await you here.

Manza Highway with an about 1,000-meter difference in elevation
Up to the Tsumagoi Highland, broadleaf trees, such as oak and red leaves, can be enjoyed. Further than there, needle-leaved trees, such as larch and fir trees, and Japanese maple of white birch trees and Erman’s Birch can be enjoyed. Among others, when you see checker trees and Japanese Rowan start turning red, you can feel the beginning of fall.
Manza Highway’s windings
About 600 windings (curves) typical of a mountain road continue.
Hot Spring and powder snow unique to Manza
On the area beyond Omotemanza (Tstumagoi Pasture), there are intense cold days in winter, making us feel the harshness of a mountain road. Powder snow is the blessing of the severe winter. On sunny days, you can enjoy the contrast between the whiteness of snow and the blueness of the sky. Before starting the drive, please make adequate preparations for the slippery road surface.
