Drive Guide

Atami Beach Line

Let’s enjoy this road! – The scenery will change depending on how you Drive.

“Gateway to Izu” This road is a 6.1-kilometer sightseeing road running from the prefectural border with Kanagawa Prefecture (Mongawa Intersection) to Higashikaigan-cho, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture (tourist spot “Omiya no matsu”). Although stretching parallel to National Route 135, this almost flat Beachline is much easier to drive than the national route with many uphills and curves. So it is a convenient road to avoid traffic jams as a shortcut and a time-saving road. It is the gateway to the Izu Peninsula area of “Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park“. With Mt. Fuji located at its northern end, “Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park” is a national park representative of Japan–a volcanic country–comprising various volcanic landforms within the Fuji Volcanic Zone as well as hot springs, richly varying coastlines, and islands. ※Click here for the highlights of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park
The glow of the sunrise seen from the Beachline changes depending on ocean waves and weather of the day. In the morning, the blueness of the sea is accentuated by the sunshine. This road makes you feel that “reluxed while driving.” “How you drive changes the value of this road.”
※The administration office (Mongawa toll plaza) has a toilet, which can be used freely 24/7.

“Rising sun” and “sunrise glow” that can be seen from anywhere on the road.
Depending on the season and the place to see them, the position of the Manazuru Peninsula and the rising sun change. The sunrise glow also varies according to the weather, movement of waves, and shape of clouds. It is interesting to tell your fortune for the day with the sunrise glow. No matter how many times you drive on this road, you don’t get tired of “the scenery of the moment.” Please enjoy quite soothing scenery.
*They can’t be viewed from some areas of the road.
If you are no good at getting up early, it is also recommended to drive the Beachline during the daytime. Mid-morning, the sea looks blue under the sun. The deep-blue color of the sea, the white color of waves lapping onto the seawalls, and the green color of the trees along the road softly meet the eye.
*This road is an automobile road. Taking a picture outside the car is prohibited.
The annual “Atami Sea Fireworks Festival” is hosted by Atami City and Atami Hotel Association. From early summer until autumn, the festival is held on an irregular schedule. (Please see the website of Atami City) Many people gather at “Sun Beach” in front of the stage where fireworks are set off. It is good to see the fireworks by staying nights in Atami. It is also good to see them by dropping in Atami on the way home from a drive to Izu. In the finale of the festival, large fireworks light up the night sky. *Parking on the Beachline is prohibited. Please use parking lots in the city.
