Drive Guide

Mt. Moiwa Sightseeing Road

Driveway along the ridgeline for about 3.5 kilometers on the south side of Mt. Moiwa

As you drive up the hill road while enjoying nature that shows various aspects from spring until autumn, you can enjoy seeing the streetscape of Sapporo unfold further and further.
We also recommend stretching your legs a bit and driving to hot spring sightseeing spots such as Hoheikyo and Jozankei Onsen, which are blessed with volcanic activity in ”Shikotsu-Toya National Park”. Located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido Prefecture, ”Shikotsu-Toya National Park” is a park where visitors can see not only see two large caldera lakes -Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya – but also variously shaped volcanoes and volcanic landforms -such as Mt. Yotei, Mt. Usuzan, and Mt. Tarumae. ※Click here for the highlights of Shikotsu-Toya National Park

Mt. Moiwa is located almost in the center of Sapporo City. From the mountain top at an altitude of 531 meters, it is possible to see a panoramic view of the grand Ishikari Plain. Ainu people once called the mountain “Inkarushipe (a regular platform for a lookout)” and used the mountain for the lookout. Mt. Moiwa is located almost in the center of Sapporo City. From the mountaintop at an altitude of 531 meters, it is possible to see a panoramic view of the grand Ishikari Plain. Ainu people once called the mountain “Inkarushipe (a regular platform for a lookout)” and used the mountain for the lookout. Even today, you can see a 360-degree spectacular panoramic view of high-rise buildings in the city area and the bounties of nature. Above all else, the night view is so beautiful that it was chosen as one of the “Japan’s New Three Most Spectacular Night Views” by General incorporated association YAKEI Convention & Visitors Bureau. The lights and illuminations of Sapporo look beautiful in pictures. However, its sparking view like a gem, if seen from the mountaintop as you feel the cold air, looks more vivid, causing more excitement and leaving a more profound impression on you.

Nature in Mt. Moiwa where renowned scholars were grown up.
In the Meiji period, due to the development of Sapporo, valuable virgin forests were being lost in many places. Around that time, the virgin forest in Mt. Moiwa was designated as the first Natural Monument of Hokkaido on March 3, 1921. Since then, renowned scholars in botany and entomology have been born from Mt. Moiwa, which as a place for familiar research. Besides, the mountain has played a role as a place for “relaxation” and “learning” for people in Sapporo. In pursuit of the coexistence with nature-friendly tourism, nature learning pathways are available in Mt. Moiwa based on the idea that wants to make it an ideal place to share with children the importance of nature through contact with nature. Mt. Moiwa can be visited on excursion trips, field trips, or school trips.
